About
Durango Mountain Camp offers a 5 ½ week language immersion summer session that combines one on one Orton-Gillingham based tutoring with individualized study hall, composition, and oral and silent reading. Campers take part in art, co-curricular activities, outdoor adventures, game nights, soccer, kickball, trivia, camp fires, story time, water activities, and weekend overnight camping and backpacking trips. Overnight campers live in cabins on campus, separated by gender, with about 8 students and 2–3 camp counselors in each cabin.
• Ages: 9–16 years old
• Schedule: 5 ½ week language immersion program with a full-day schedule; day campers attend Monday–Friday from 8:50 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.
Durango Mountain Camp offers an intensive 5 ½ week language immersion program for diagnosed dyslexic students ages 11–16, with day campers ages 9–16. Day campers receive the same intensive, highly personalized academic program as overnight campers, and lunch is provided daily for day campers. Overnight campers ages 11–16 have a full residential experience, and all meals and snacks are provided for overnight campers.
Durango Mountain Camp was established in 1998 and states its mission as “Helping YoungDyslexic Minds Thrive.” The program notes that its immersion approach builds a strong language foundation that allows students greater success when they return home to their normal academic environment, and that many students progress through several levels in their language skills during the 5 ½ week summer session. It also states that challenging activities help develop creativity, enhance self-esteem, foster individual strengths, and generate enthusiasm, and that greater self-confidence from outdoor pursuits often translates to a more positive attitude, which can last long after campers leave Durango Mountain Camp.
Evenings at Durango Mountain Camp feature group activities, as well as weekend overnight camping and backpacking trips that build teamwork, confidence, and lasting friendships. Applications for returning campers open on November 1st, and applications for new campers open on December 1st. Year-round tutoring is also available through the program.
One parent testimonial states: “We’ve only been home for a few days, and our socks have been knocked off! Connor has shared more about his awesome adventures at camp, and he has been reading with me. I am absolutely astounded at his progress! He’s not hesitant anymore, and he is able to correctly decode so many more words. This is such a blessing! Thank you so much for all of the hard work that I know must go into running DMC. The benefits of your program will have a ripple effect throughout Connor’s life. Thanks again to you and all of the staff at DMC. We will most definitely be back next summer!” Durango Mountain Camp also shares the statement “Helping dyslexic minds thrive!” in its own materials.
