About
Explorer Camp Erie introduces campers to outdoor activities including hiking, kayaking, canoeing, biking, yoga, art, and music. One-week Explorer summer camps include a balance of these adventure sports and creative pursuits. Campers meet daily at a consistent location, then ride with Avid4 Adventure staff, who provide transportation to and from recreation areas and access to top-of-the-line gear specifically sized for kids.

Explorer Camp Erie is part of Avid4 Adventure, which states a belief in the transformative power of the outdoors and in empowering kids from PreK–12. The program is backed by the Avid4 Adventure Guarantee, which promises an authentic outdoor adventure, incredibly well-trained and professional staff, and increased confidence, and states that if these promises are not met, the next Avid4 Adventure camp is free. Avid4 Adventure reports that its programs evolve as campers grow from age 3 to 17, that it hires committed, experienced instructors, uses professional-caliber equipment, and transports campers to authentic local recreation areas they can continue to explore.
Instructors are all 18 and older with impeccable credentials and serious safety and skills training, and the camper to staff ratio is 5:1. Every activity starts with a discussion about the risks involved, how to prevent them, and how to respond if something goes wrong, and Avid4 Adventure states that it does everything in its power to keep kids safe but does not “pack them up in bubble wrap.” Avid4 Adventure is accredited by the American Camp Association, named among Colorado Parent’s Top 5 Sports Camps, and is a Certified B Corp, and it operates under a Special Use authorization from the National Forest Service.
Explorer Camp Erie is led by Avid4 Adventure founder David Secunda, a former president of the Outdoor Industry Association and a 25-year veteran of the outdoor education industry. Avid4 Adventure states that it recognizes itself as a premium camp, is 100% committed to paying educators a fair wage, and is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Families are strongly encouraged to have campers bring their own bike for biking day and to remove any training wheels prior to camp.
One parent in September 2023 reported that this was their daughter’s favorite camp, that she tried stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, and biking, and that she progressed from biking with training wheels to riding without them after camp. Another parent in September 2023 described Avid’s staff as mature, responsible, and excited to share their passion with children, and described the program as well run with new outdoor skills learned. A third parent in September 2023 said their kids had the best time at the camp, still talked about it over a month later, could not wait to go back the next year, and were active every day learning how to enjoy what Colorado has to offer.
