About
Cheley Colorado Camps offers a 27-day sleepaway camp program where campers take part in activities such as sports and games, creative arts and crafts, horseback riding, outdoor adventure, climbing and a challenge course, hiking to a summit, and riding horseback. The program is divided into eight distinct units organized by age, and campers unplug from technology and communicate with families through letters and postcards.
• Ages: 9–17 years old
• Schedule: 27-day sleepaway camp program
Cheley Colorado Camps was established in 1921 and has hosted more than 100 summers. The program includes Land O'Peaks Ranch units for ages 9–11 (Lower Chipeta for girls and Lower Ski Hi for boys), ages 12–13 (Chipeta for girls and Ski Hi for boys), and ages 14–17 (Senior Chipeta for girls and Haiyaha for boys), as well as Trail’s End Ranch units for ages 12–17 (Girls’ Trail’s End and Boys’ Trail’s End), with the Trail’s Ends operating as self-contained units. Each unit has its own lodge, boathouse, and living spaces, and campers in various units develop a Code of Living.
Every counselor is carefully selected, background-checked, and completes over 10 days of training in first aid, risk management, child protection, and mental health before campers arrive. The camp has four on-site health centers staffed by licensed medical professionals, conducts regular drills, and follows clear protocols with strong local partnerships for crisis response. Meals are made from scratch and served family-style, with options for every dietary need, including allergies and restrictions.
The program follows a No Package Policy, with exceptions for pre-approved essential items and birthday packages, and birthday packages cannot include food or cash. If a camper forgets essential items that are not available in the camp store, parents may send a pre-approved package with those necessities. Campers are expected to bring stationery, stamps, and envelopes or can purchase them at the camp store, mail is sent out every day except Sunday, and there is structured letter-writing on Sundays. Campers do not have access to email or phones, but families can send one-way emails through Bunk1, which also provides a photo gallery and BunkNote credits, and unit directors call first-year families by the end of the first week of each term.
Cheley Colorado Camps states its mission as building the lasting character and resiliency of young people by creating unique life experiences in a challenging and nurturing natural environment and refers to its program as the 5-star, nationally recognized Cheley Experience. As one parent shared, “Cheley gave my child the confidence to explore, grow, and thrive—and I knew they were in safe hands.” Campers and staff describe their experiences with statements such as, “Camp to me is a pathway to exert myself and live up to my full potential. It’s a paradise I come to each summer which shows me who I want to be,” “Life here is simpler. Do what you love with those you love. It’s a place where friends turn into family and families become unbreakable. Cheley is more than just a camp. It’s home,” and “Not only is camp a month full of joy, adventure, laughter, and so much more, but it also means having people and a place that will always have your back.”
