Camp Chief Ouray offers activities such as Archery, Arts & Crafts, Campfire Skits/Songs, Group Games, Hiking, Nature Studies, and Outdoor Survival. Campers also take part in Freedom of Choice Activities (FOCA), which they select from available options, and weekly themed games and activities mainly in the evenings and after meals.
• Ages: 5–17 years old
• Schedule: Mini Camp is a 3-day/2-night experience; Traditional Overnight and Challenger Camps follow a Sunday–Saturday schedule with check-in on Sunday afternoon, daily activities and evening programs Monday through Friday, and check-out with a parent show on Saturday morning.
Camp Chief Ouray was founded in December 1908, became co-ed in 1962, relocated to YMCA of the Rockies Snow Mountain Ranch in 1979, and celebrated its 110th anniversary in 2018. It offers a variety of overnight and day camps for youth, families, and adults, including Day Camp weekly sessions for ages 5–14, Overnight Camps and Leadership & Trips Programs for ages 7–17, Family & Adult Camps, Parents' Night Out programs, and 1-, 2-, or 3-week Overnight Camp sessions. Traditional Overnight Camp includes week-long or half-week programs, with cabins of up to 10 campers and 2 staff members, while Challenger program cabins include up to 20 campers with 4 staff in male-identifying and female-identifying cabins, and Mini Camp is a 3-day/2-night experience for ages 7–12.
Counselors and staff members for all programs, including Mini Camp, Traditional Overnight Camp, Two-Week programs, and Challenger Camp, are 18 or older, are background checked (fingerprinted, FBI/CBI, Trails, Sex Offender Search), receive 10 days of intensive training for working with different age groups, and complete child abuse prevention trainings through organizations such as The Redwoods Group, Praesidium, and Darkness to Light. Challenger Camp staff are also Wilderness First Aid certified. Parent Handbooks and Packing Lists are provided under “Come Prepared for Your Time at CCO.”
Camp Chief Ouray is accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA) and is visited regularly to assure compliance with ACA standards, is licensed by the State of Colorado Department of Social Services with annual visits for license renewal, and is a Gold Standard Youth Program with Leave No Trace, Inc. The program focuses on the five core values of the YMCA: Caring, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility, and Faith, and promotes the seven principles of Leave No Trace. Camp Chief Ouray offers scholarships on a sliding scale and invites families to apply, and YMCA of the Rockies states that its activities and facilities will be inclusive, accessible, and available to the diverse worldwide community it serves, welcoming all people and organizations of good will. The mission of YMCA of the Rockies is to put Christian principles into practice through programs, staff, and facilities in an environment that builds a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.
