Camp Hope is a free kids camp in Mesa County, Colorado that provides transportation, food, and lodging at no cost to campers or their families. Since 2009, Camp Hope has provided scholarships to over 1,700 kids that would not otherwise be able to attend any camp. Each year, nearly 100 volunteers give their time and skills, and Camp Hope keeps a 1:1 camper to kingdom buddy ratio. Louie and Carrie Nelson, the founders and camp directors, oversee the day-to-day operation of the camp and its staff of volunteers.

Camp Hope is celebrating over a decade of bringing the Good News to the kids in the community. The camp on the Grand Mesa was owned and operated by the Kiwanis Club of Grand Junction for over 87 years, and in 2009 Camp Hope entered into a long-term partnership with the Kiwanis Club. After 10 years of partnership, Camp Hope Inc. took ownership of the camp, and in 2010 Camp Hope Inc. received its 501 (c)(3) non-profit status and now operates under the direction of the Camp Hope Board. Camp Hope, Inc. operates under a permit from the US Forest Service, Grand Mesa Uncompahgre, and Gunnison National Forest.

The mission of Camp Hope is to help youth realize they are loved, valued, and created for purpose, and to teach campers how to live in the world while realizing that they have purpose for their lives. Camp Hope states that it is a safe place where kids realize that they are loved, valued, and created for purpose. One parent shared that Camp Hope created memories for their kids that are going to last a lifetime, gave them a sense of community, and changed their outlook on life itself, giving them a sense of purpose. A preschool teacher named Bobby Jo, who has been involved with camp for about 11 years, said that the camp helps kids have more confidence in themselves so they can make better choices and that she has never seen any camp do what Camp Hope does or love like the kids are loved there.

Camp Hope notes that it loves its valley and invites people to join community events to learn more about how the camp helps to serve the community. It describes itself as a resource for Mesa County families and states that, with the support of Kiwanis and various other community organizations, the camp has updated its facilities over the years and has a long history of community support. The program reports “1700+ Campers, 150+ Volunteers, 17+ Years” and states that, with God and the continued support of the community, it can continue programs of hope to those in Western Colorado that need it most.
