Wheat Ridge Sun Camp is a state-licensed day camp that operates with group-based supervision at a ratio of one staff member for every 12–15 campers, with small groups formed based on similar ages and interests and following Jefferson County Public Health guidelines. Summer Sun Camp uses two locations to serve more campers and families, with campers placed by age and a maximum of 66 kids per day in the Anderson Building group (ages 6–8) and 30 kids per day in the Recreation Center group (ages 9–12); field trips are scheduled on Wednesdays for the Anderson Building group and Thursdays for the Recreation Center group. Sun Camp is offered during Jefferson County Public Schools’ spring, summer, and winter breaks, and campers are asked to bring two snacks, lunch, a camp swim shirt, swimsuit and towel (for Summer Sun Camp or as notified for other sessions), tennis shoes, and a water bottle each day. All camp staff complete 22 hours of training annually and hold American Red Cross First Aid and CPR/AED certification. Inclusion is stated as a core value of the recreation programs, with a commitment to creating an environment where campers with cognitive or physical disabilities are able to participate and thrive alongside other campers, and if the camp program is not an appropriate fit based on the child’s needs and the accommodations available, a full refund of the initial registration payment will be issued, with card processing fees possibly not refundable. Camp staff do not provide personal care services such as diapering, toileting assistance, or other hygiene-related care, and campers must be independent with personal care needs while at camp. The camp is part of a department where Aquatics Coordinator Cydne Pope was recognized as Aquatics Professional of the Year at the Colorado Parks and Recreation Association conference. The Camp Director is Cheyanne Greer, who also serves as Youth & Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator and can be reached by email or at 303-231-1317.
