The Girls in Politics Initiative was founded in 2011 as a for-profit, self-funded company. Instruction for all in-person camps and virtual classes is in English, and virtual classes are hosted in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United States and the United Kingdom and are open to all girls. Camp Congress for Youth is offered in the United States only for girls and boys ages 8 to 17 through the Youth in Politics Initiative brand.

GIP instructors are women with extensive experience working in electoral politics and government, including current and former congressional staffers, parliamentary staffers, political campaign staffers, elected officials, appointed officials, licensed teachers and political science professors. All instructors and staff undergo annual background screenings and are duly registered in accordance with any requirements mandated by law in the markets in which the Girls in Politics Initiative operates. The company does not accept financial support, funding or sponsorships from political parties or special interest groups and has no affiliations with any political party or special interest group.

The camp fee includes all materials, a GIP logo shirt and a treat bag, and if a student is unable to attend a camp or virtual class, a voucher is issued for the full value of the registration fee paid; the voucher does not expire and can be used for any future camp or virtual class. The Girls in Politics Initiative does not offer volunteer opportunities or book speakers, and financial aid or scholarships are not offered. Testimonials from parents and participants describe experiences at Mother-Daughter Camp Congress, Camp Congress for Girls, Camp United Nations for Girls, and various webinars, including comments about earning Girl Scout badges, using the webinars to supplement homeschool social studies, and attending classes in cities such as Washington, DC, New York City, San Francisco, Sydney, London and Toronto.
