The mission of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington is to help boys and girls of all backgrounds, especially those who need the Clubs most, build confidence, develop character, and acquire the skills needed to become productive, civic-minded, responsible adults. BGCGW serves the Greater Washington area’s kids through five key elements for positive youth development: safety, fun, support, opportunity, and recognition. Its Formula for Impact focuses on academic success, good character, and healthy lifestyles, and serves as a roadmap for regional Clubs to help members achieve these priority outcomes. This model is used at all BGCGW sites and incorporates high-yield learning activities, targeted programs, and regular attendance.
Across its 26 sites covering 75 miles from Manassas to Germantown, BGCGW serves nearly 12,000 youth annually through regular Club membership and community outreach. The Clubs are open when schools are not and are described as safe havens and a safe and fun alternative to being home alone or on the street. Reported outcomes for Club members include that 100% of Club kids graduate high school on time, 100% of seniors pursue postsecondary options, and 65% state that Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington saved their life.
