Special Olympics Sports Programs offers year-round sports training for participants with intellectual disabilities. The program includes athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

Since the establishment of Special Olympics in 1968, the organization has provided year-round sports training and athletic competition in Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The mission of Special Olympics includes serving athletes with intellectual disabilities and working with hundreds of thousands of volunteers and coaches each year. Through the power of play, Special Olympics Northern California unites people with and without intellectual disabilities in programs in sports, health, schools and leadership that promote acceptance and respect.

In Northern California, Special Olympics serves more than 31,000 participants and impacts hundreds of thousands of students. More than 21,000 volunteers and coaches support Special Olympics Northern California. Globally, Special Olympics supports over 5 million athletes, unified partners, coaches and volunteers with 32 Olympic-type sports, and holds about 5 competitions per hour across the globe. The movement includes 256 National and State Programs, 24,383 Unified Schools, 393,943 coaches, 68,053 athlete health screenings, and 820,832 volunteers.

The broader Special Olympics leadership team includes roles such as Vice President, Health Service & Education; Vice President, International Media Relations and Communications; Regional Presidents and Managing Directors for multiple world regions; and directors and managers overseeing communications, sport operations, global education, youth development, family engagement, leadership and organizational excellence, marketing, and strategic partnerships.
