About

Hands-on History Youth Programs offers a one-week Fiber Camp where participants do fabric dyeing, hand stitching, braiding, papermaking, and wet felting with resists. Campers also use resists to create patterns as part of the fiber projects.

• Ages: 10–18 years old
• Schedule: One-week Fiber Camp session, Monday–Friday, 9 am to 2 pm each day
• Price: Early Bird pricing is $185/camper until June 1, 2026; after June 1, registration is $225. Granny Squares Aren't for Grannies workshop cost: $15 per person.

The Hands-on History Youth Programs are part of the West Volusia Historical Society, which was founded in 1973. The West Volusia Historical Society is a not-for-profit, all-volunteer organization dedicated to researching, preserving and publicly sharing the history of West Volusia County. The leadership team includes D. Gray Leonhard, current Mayor of the Town of Pierson. Programs and exhibits are sponsored in part by the City of DeLand, Volusia County, DeLand Breakfast Rotary, Kemp Realty Group, MBI, and the Rotary Club of DeLand, with additional support from community organizations.

Camp is limited to 12 campers, and due to the complexity of projects, the minimum age for campers is 10 years old. Children bring their own lunch, which can be stored in a refrigerator, and a morning snack and cold water are supplied. Campers are asked to bring a large towel to fold and use as a cushion for floor activities. Some projects are messy and dyes can stain clothes, so campers are advised to wear comfortable clothing that can get dirty. The Granny Squares Aren't for Grannies workshop is for youth ages 10 and older and for “Kids at Heart” who know how to crochet, and crochet hooks and yarn are provided to create samples of a variety of square types.
