About
Englewood Sailing Association Youth Sailing Programs include summer sailing camp, spring and fall youth sailing, youth racing, and special events such as the Lemon Drop Regatta. The program also offers activities connected to the youth program community, including a field trip to tour Sail Technologies with a catered lunch and a visit to Sunken Gardens, which is described as a 100 year old tropical garden with plants, a butterfly aviary, and flamingos.
• Ages: 9–17 years old
• Schedule: Summer Sailing Camp runs in three Monday–Friday sessions from 9am to 3pm, with each session lasting five days
• Price: Adult sailing membership for 2026 is $200 per year per family
Englewood Sailing Association has been teaching small boat sailing on Lemon Bay since 2002 and is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization. The organization states a mission of building confidence, character, and community through sailing and lists Safety, Fun, Learning, Confidence, Character, and Community as values. Programs follow US Sailing’s “Learn Sailing Right” curriculum, and graduates of the fall and spring beginning sailing program can earn certification through US Sailing’s “Little Red Book” program. Englewood Sailing Association is a proud partner of US Sailing, the official governing body for small-boat sailing, and reports that every year over 150 people from Sarasota and Charlotte Counties and beyond learn to sail with the organization.
US Sailing-certified instructors lead the on-the-water instruction, and volunteers who help with Summer Camp are required to have a fingerprint/background check within the last five years, along with refreshed SafeSport Training and First Aid/CPR/AED Training. The leadership team includes John Riehl, Cathy, Bibi, and Pat Beffel, with each named as the contact for specific activities and training areas. The organization notes that unaccompanied minor Englewood Sailing Association members can attend the field trip to St. Petersburg because there will be enough adults, and that there is no cost to members for this field trip, which includes the tour of Sail Technologies, catered lunch, and visit to Sunken Gardens.
