• Schedule: Youth and adult programs are offered on specific Wednesdays, Saturdays, and multi-day sessions, including Novice Youth Sailing on three Saturdays from 11 AM to 3 PM and Spring Youth Sailing and Spring Youth Racing starting March 7 from 11 AM to 3 PM; Adult Learn to Sail runs March 2–5 with sixteen hours of instruction over 4 days.
• Price: Adult sailing membership for 2026 is $200 per year per family; Adult Learn to Sail March 2–5 is $300.
Englewood Sailing Association has been teaching small boat sailing on Lemon Bay since 2002 and is an all-volunteer, member-based, non-profit organization. Its mission states that it is dedicated to building confidence, character, and community through sailing. The organization reports that every year over 150 people from Sarasota and Charlotte Counties and beyond learn to sail with Englewood Sailing Association, and it nurtures partnerships with the local community and teaches respect for the environment.
Programs are led by US Sailing-certified instructors, and Englewood Sailing Association is a proud partner of US Sailing, the official governing body for small-boat sailing. Programs follow US Sailing's “Learn Sailing Right” curriculum, and graduates of the fall and spring beginning sailing program can earn certification through US Sailing's “Little Red Book” program. The organization states that safety on and off the water is the number one priority, and every time sailors are on the water there is at least one safety boat operating with a skipper and a crew member.
Safety Boat Training includes learning how to safely position the boat for coaching, how to rescue a capsize, how to tow a boat in distress, and how to tow a safety boat one mile from McCall Ave to the launch. The organization notes that it provides quality instruction, one-on-one coaching, and low-cost opportunities for learning, and that it fosters teamwork, communication, and leadership in students and staff.
The leadership team includes John Riehl as the contact for Wednesday adult social sailing and Novice Youth Sailing, Cathy as the contact for Adult Learn to Sail and board meeting questions, and Pat Beffel, who sends a monthly email recruiting volunteers to skipper and crew a safety boat for Saturday adult and family social sailing.
