Founded in 1980 as Scouting America’s first co-educational facility, Florida National High Adventure Sea Base offers High Adventure programs in February–April, May–August, and December each year. Sea Base programs include 20 different adventure treks across multiple locations, including offerings such as the Out Island Adventure, Keys Adventure, Florida Fishing Adventure, and Marine STEM Adventure. Sea Base offers professional courses and training so Scouts learn from certified instructors, including Divemaster Academy, Dive Instructor Development Course, and Captain’s Course.
Sea Base operates a Family Adventure Camp that is open to the general public from October through April and serves more than 16,000 individuals annually. The Brinton Environmental Center hosts over 4,500 participants each year and includes the first land-based coral nursery of its kind on-site, constructed with the goal of supporting ongoing coral restoration efforts in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and serving as an educational facility where youth and students actively participate in the restoration process. On Big Munson Island, which is an untouched, uninhabited island over 100 acres in size that Sea Base has committed to retain in its natural state, lightweight screened tents, cooking gear, and other necessary equipment are provided, while all personal gear, food, and water must be waded ashore.
Camp Jackson Sawyer at the Edward B. Knight Scout Reservation offers tent camping sites, campfire rings, a modern restroom and shower facility, two covered pavilion spaces, a beach volleyball court, a seaside pier, and outdoor activity space, and is now used for Family Adventure Camping and tent camping opportunities for Scouting units and other qualified community, service, and youth organizations. Bahamas Sea Base offers three different sailing adventures that can accommodate crews of 6–8, 10–12, or 18–20, with Bahamas sailing crews having the opportunity to sail the Sea of Abaco and visit surrounding islands and settlements. At St. Thomas Sea Base, sailing operations include crews circumnavigating St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands throughout the duration of their adventure.
Sea Base’s partnership with Mote Marine Laboratories led to the construction of a land-based coral nursery at the Brinton Environmental Center. Since 1994, Sea Base has been recognized as a World Organization of Scouting Movement Scout Center of Excellence for Nature, Environment and Sustainability, and it is recognized as a NOAA Blue Star provider, a 100% Project Aware Member, a Florida DEP Clean and Sustainable Marina, and a REEF Environmental Education Field Station. Sea Base is nationally and internationally recognized for safety. The mission of Scouting America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.
The leadership team has included Captain Paul Beal as General Manager and Mike Lucivero as Program Director. The original Florida National High Adventure Sea Base location began as a fishing camp after the highway opened in 1938 and later became the Tollgate Inn, which Scouting America purchased in 1979.
