Founded in 1966, the museum that offers After School Art is led by Dr. Daryl Ward, Interim Executive Director. It is a Smithsonian Affiliate and is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. Mayfaire by-the-Lake, associated with the museum, was named the 20th best art festival in the nation by Sunshine Artist Magazine. The museum’s permanent collection includes more than 3,400 works of art and serves approximately 140,000 visitors annually who learn through works of art from across time and place. It serves 66,000 local and global visitors annually through a diverse schedule of exhibitions and art education programs, and admission to the museum is always free. It is the only Smithsonian Affiliate fine art museum in Central Florida and is the largest and only nationally accredited visual arts organization in Polk County.
The museum’s mission states that it is an academic and community museum that engages audiences of all ages with world-class exhibitions, programs, and experiences, and that it offers avenues for lifelong learning and ways to see and reflect on the shared world through art and visual culture in new and innovative ways. Museum staff have worked with the School Board of Polk County to establish and sustain a curriculum-based art education program in alignment with Polk County Schools.
