About

Camp Weed Summer Camp takes place at a Christ-centered camp that offers spiritual, educational, and recreational programs. Campers have access to facilities such as a swimming pool, Mandi’s Chapel, the Ravine building with guest rooms and a conference room, the Varn Dining Hall, and the Snell/McCarty Youth Pavilion with a gymnasium and year-round meeting space.

The camp operates within a setting whose mission is described as “a Christ-centered place set apart for natural solitude, enabling worship, renewal, educational enrichment, recreation, and community for all the people of God.” The camp is part of a site that has grown over time, beginning with the first summer camp in the Diocese in June 1924, followed by the purchase of a 500-acre site on White Lake near Live Oak in 1978 and the construction of permanent facilities starting in 1981. Seven cabins, roads, and swimming and recreation areas were completed in 1982, a kitchen and dining hall were added in 1983, Mandi’s Chapel was dedicated in 1995, the Ravine building and Varn Dining Hall opened in 2004, and the Snell/McCarty Youth Pavilion was dedicated in 2006.

Mandi’s Chapel, used as a worship facility for the camp, was ranked second on AIA Florida’s list “Florida Architecture: 100 Years. 100 Places” on April 18, 2012. The broader Camp Weed & Cerveny Conference Center, where the summer camp is held, is available for use by faith communities, nonprofits, community groups, schools, and government agencies.

One testimonial from Rev. Alvin S. Bullen describes Camp Weed as “sand and sandspurs, blue waters and a cool breeze, bricks and wood and screen wire, permeated by devotion and sprinkled liberally with joy,” and refers to it as “an oasis of refreshment and a crossroads for travelers on the Christian highway.” The same testimonial characterizes Camp Weed as “confusion with a purpose,” “energy with a halo,” “a case of homesickness with a built-in cure,” and “knowledge in shorts and worship in T-shirts,” and notes that “its meaning must be experienced in person to be fully understood.”
