Miami City Ballet was founded in 1985 by Miami philanthropist Toby Lerner Ansin. The company’s founding artistic director was Edward Villella (1985–2012), followed by Lourdes Lopez (2012–2025), and the current artistic director is Gonzalo Garcia. Miami City Ballet’s mission is to produce and present dance performances throughout Florida, the United States, and abroad, train young aspiring dancers, and develop Miami City Ballet School into a leader of dance education. The headquarters building, called the Ophelia & Juan Js. Roca Center, is a 63,000-square-foot facility that houses eight rehearsal studios, school facilities, Miami City Ballet’s wardrobe department and costume shop, a fully equipped therapy room, and administrative space, and it was designed by architect Bernardo Fort-Brescia of ARQUITECTONICA.

Miami City Ballet presents annual seasons in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties, reaching over 132,000 patrons each year and touring across the U.S., Canada, and Europe. The company is described as one of America’s premier ballet companies, recognized nationally and internationally for artistic excellence, vibrant style, and innovative spirit. Its 2016 debut at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater was celebrated as a triumph. The New York Times has called Miami City Ballet “an exceptional troupe, by Balanchine standards, anywhere in the world,” and critic Alastair Macaulay wrote that “of all the ballet troupes who have visited the Koch in recent years, none looks so truly and completely a company.”
