Carlson Gracie Miami Brazilian Jiu Jitsu & MMA academy was founded and opened in June of 2008. The program is led by Master Michel “Buiu” Porfirio Pereira, a Fifth degree Professor described as a doctor of the art with three and a half decades of experience and knowledge in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The team includes four black belt instructors who are Certified IBJJF Black Belt Professors.
The academy states a mission of preserving and spreading the authentic art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, rooted in its original traditions from Rio de Janeiro, and bringing the pure essence of this martial art to the community of West Kendall. The program follows diverse teachings from the Carlson Gracie Family and includes values such as compassion, truthfulness, loyalty, honor, courage, respect, and discipline, as well as the traditional “Bushido” code of the warrior, including Gi (Integrity), Rei (Respect), Yu (Moral Courage), Meyo (Honor), Jin (Compassion), Makoto (Honesty & Sincerity), and Chu (Duty & Loyalty). The program incorporates a classic style martial arts system with positive philosophies and lifestyle-altering teaching methods.
The academy is a member of the Carlson Gracie Federation, which stretches around the world from continent to continent. Before Master Michel “Buiu” Porfirio Pereira came to Florida, there were no IBJJF tournaments in the state, and in 2009 he was the instrument in bringing and organizing one of the biggest international tournaments in the world to South Florida. He was awarded by the Gracie Family in a ceremony of honor and recognition for “The expansion of Brazilian Jiu jitsu in South Florida,” and he is one of five men certified under the American Brazilian Jiu jitsu Federation to teach under this lineage in the United States, as well as a vital member of the International Brazilian Jiu jitsu Federation (IBJJF).
When families sign up, they receive a free team GI, rash guard, and shorts. The academy offers competitive month-to-month rates with no contracts required and invites families to come in and try a free class to experience training and meet the Certified IBJJF Black Belt Professors. One testimonial shared by the program states, “I would rather have one student that changed his lifestyle and heart through Jiu jitsu, then five hundred champion fighters.”
