Classes take place at Miami Shotokan Karate Club, which is described as Miami’s premier karate dojo based in Southwest Miami-Dade county and is located in the same plaza as the original Sports Grill.

• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Classes are offered Monday through Saturday.

Miami Shotokan Karate Club was founded by Sensei Jose Ferrand (JKA 7th Dan) in 1993. Miami Shotokan is led by Sensei Jose Ferrand, a 7th degree black belt and bonafide Japan Karate Association certified instructor who is aware of the most current JKA standards. The club is a direct affiliate of the Japan Karate Association and JKA/American Federation. The stated mission is that “Karate for us is not simply a form of self-defense….. it is a way of life.”

The dojo is described as a family-friendly dojo that offers both children’s and adult’s classes, and many students train as a family. It offers numerous daily classes for both children and adults. Members participate in various special training camps and tournaments both regionally and nationally, and there is an annual anniversary celebration with a sunrise training on Key Biscayne followed by a BBQ open to all dojo members and their families, along with other family-friendly events for dojo members throughout the year.

Parent and student comments describe Sensei Jose Ferrand as putting his heart and dedication into every single class he teaches and as a strong instructor and leader who shares his years of experience in Shotokan Karate. Testimonials also state that this is a place where kids learn the true art of Shotokan Karate, that Sensei is aware of the most current JKA standards and strives to improve technique and stamina through intense training, and that karate at this dojo has enhanced focus, disciplined the mind, and conditioned the body for at least one family. One testimonial notes that a former student returns to train at Miami Shotokan Karate Club when visiting Miami, describing Sensei Jose as a bonafide Japan Karate Association certified instructor and the classes as having worldwide experiences and competency, with strong spirit from adult and child member students.
