About

Zoo Miami Camps includes hands-on activities, games, animal encounters, and creative, colorful crafts. Campers spend time learning about wildlife, with an introduction to environmental conservation and chances for close-up encounters while making new friends. Activities include exploring the Florida: Mission Everglades exhibit, learning about animals that live in mangroves and wetlands, discovering how animals adapt to seasonal changes, and exploring pollinators such as bees, butterflies, bats, and birds. Campers also explore the Amazon, Asian jungles, African rainforests, coastal shores, coral reefs, freshwater habitats, wetlands, oceans, rivers, grasslands, mountains, and deserts, and meet animals like jaguars, tigers, gorillas, lions, elephants, birds, marine animals, and reptiles. Special themed days and weeks include Ocean Protectors Day, Global Safari Celebration, and Zoo’s Greatest Hits, and campers can adopt an animal that comes with a plush animal, certificate of adoption, fact sheet, and a photo taken by Ron Magill, as well as purchase and wear Zoo Camp shirts.

Zoo Miami’s history traces back to 1948 with the Crandon Park Zoo on Key Biscayne, and the current zoo occupies almost 750 acres with 4 miles of walkways and is home to more than 2,000 animals representing 375 different species. Zoo Miami groups animals according to their geographic territories with compatible species placed together and features lush, tropical, open-air exhibits that replicate animals’ natural habitats, water play areas, up-close animal encounters and feedings, and the Conservation Action Center, an indoor interactive exhibit where guests can crawl through a python to learn about invasive species. Zoo Miami is the largest zoo in Florida, the fifth largest in the United States, and the only sub-tropical zoo in the continental U.S.

The zoo’s vision is “Uniting everyone with nature to protect and restore wildlife,” and its mission is “To inspire people through engaging experiences to preserve nature in South Florida and across the globe.” Zoo Miami is involved in over 36 wildlife and environmental conservation projects on six continents. The leadership team includes Director William Elgar, Assistant Zoo Director Philip Hillary, Infrastructure and Construction Division Chief Darian A. Fonticiella, Chief of Operations Diana Vega, and Chief of Animal Health Dr. Gwen Myers.
