Summerland Camps is in its 9th continuous year of operation. The program’s mission is to offer a transformative experience for teens aged 12–21 by providing tools to break free from screen overuse and build healthy digital management habits and lasting life skills focused on controlling behaviors, emotions, and thoughts. The program focuses on changing screen habits through online behavior coaching, executive function coaching, online therapy for video game addiction and social media overuse, personalized assessments of technology usage patterns, use of a Behavior Planning Journal for goal setting and accountability, and incorporation of cognitive-behavioral techniques and digital detox strategies with relapse prevention components.

Summerland Camps describes itself as the longest-running and most effective year-round adventure-based program for transforming screen habits into life-changing success, with a supportive, technology-free environment. Each camper participates in one structured group session per day focused on screen habits and self-regulation, and campers receive bi-weekly screen habit change groups and weekly self-esteem groups. The program emphasizes controlling “BET”: Behaviors, Emotions, and Thoughts, and uses motivational and sports psychology techniques including goal setting, behavior planning, tracking, visualization, motivation-building, and positive self-talk. The majority of each day is spent on adventure activities, socializing, and fun, and each session includes at least one beach day, with select sessions offering exclusive visits to the Kennedy Space Center to explore career paths in technology.

Summerland Camps has a team of qualified, licensed therapists who specialize in video game and social media addiction. The staff includes Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) with backgrounds in adventure sports and child development who supervise daily activities, and all staff members undergo a Level II Background Check (Livescan Fingerprint). Founder Dr. Mike Bishop, who has over 30 years of industry experience in residential treatment and psychological assessment, personally attends each session to oversee operations. The program offers a premium, personalized experience with limited enrollment capped at 12 participants or fewer per session and an approximate 1:2 camper-to-staff ratio, and notes that sessions sell out every summer. Parent education and involvement are included through communication of the child’s progress and parenting strategies, and the program also offers online behavior coaching with individual and group session packages with licensed male and female counselors, as well as year-round adventure trips during common school breaks including Thanksgiving, Winter, and Spring Break.
