About the provider
The New Worlds Reading Initiative was signed into law in June 2021. The UF Lastinger Center for Learning is the state-appointed administrator for New Worlds Reading, and Robin Gregory is the Assistant Director for the initiative. The program also includes Books & Cooks, a 12-week literacy and nutrition program created in partnership with UF/IFAS Extension, with educational sessions, children’s books, cooking demonstrations, and reading activities for families in select Florida counties.
Eligible students are VPK - 5th graders in a VPK program, public school, or charter school, who have tested below grade level in reading at any point since August 2021. Your child is still eligible even if their scores improve and there’s no income requirement to participate. Applying takes 5 minutes and no proof paperwork is required.
What families say
“My son loved receiving books in the mail that he felt were hand picked just for him. He often recognized the book from seeing it at the school or library and would say something like - I had been hoping to read that.” — Jami B., New Worlds Reading caregiver
“My son gets so excited when he gets mail and then he realizes it’s new books. We open them and read them as soon as they get in. He has struggled with reading and this makes him excited to read!” — S. Akman, New Worlds Reading caregiver
“The kids actually get excited to read when new books come in the mail! They especially like the stories with funny parts that make them laugh. They also enjoyed the books that teach about animals. The sheets with questions and review also helps me get them really comprehending what they are reading.” — Erica B., New Worlds Reading caregiver
