The Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA was founded based on the core character values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility, and it focuses on Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility. It was established in 1889, when the first YMCA facility in Tampa was built as a 50,000-square-foot building on the corner of North Florida Avenue and Zack Street, and it brought Tampa its first gymnasium and indoor swimming pool. The organization’s mission is to put Judeo-Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. Tampa YMCA members have unlimited access to all 10 family centers and three wellness centers, and members have exclusive access to youth and family programs at YMCA Camp Cristina and the Bob Sierra Youth and Family Center. Each family center has a pool, some locations feature multiple pools, all locations have new wellness equipment, and families can plan workouts with a Certified Personal Trainer at the Y. The Tampa YMCA offers an all-new childcare service with Licensed Preschool at the Y for ages 2 years old to 5 years old at two family centers. The Tampa Y is a 501(c)3 nonprofit charitable organization. Community support from individuals and local partnerships, including a continuing partnership with the Tampa Bay Lightning for a second season, helps the Y provide program scholarships and free offerings, and donations enable individuals to learn how to swim and be safe around the water, prevent and cope with chronic diseases, and build self-confidence and social skills. The Tampa YMCA logo appears on all Tampa Bay Lightning jerseys as part of the “Patch With A Purpose” program.
