The Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA was founded based on the core character values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. In 1889, the first YMCA facility was built in Tampa as a 50,000-square-foot building that brought the city its first gymnasium and indoor swimming pool. The organization’s mission is to put Judeo-Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. The Tampa YMCA focuses on Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility and operates as a 501(c)3 nonprofit charitable organization, as part of the YMCA, the largest and oldest service organization in America, which serves over 17 million members in 120 countries.
Licensed Preschool services are offered for ages 2 years old to 5 years old at two family centers, and the Before & After School Enrichment program is available at 26 Hillsborough County elementary schools and five Y locations. Tampa YMCA members have unlimited access to 10 family centers and three wellness centers, with exclusive access to youth and family programs at YMCA Camp Cristina and the Bob Sierra Youth and Family Center. Each family center has a pool, some locations feature multiple pools, and all locations have new wellness equipment and a helpful, supportive team.
Community support from individuals and local partnerships helps the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA offer program scholarships and free offerings. In Tampa Bay, the organization reaches hundreds of thousands of individuals each year through membership, programs and outreach activities. The Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA continues its partnership with the Tampa Bay Lightning for a second season, and the Tampa YMCA logo appears on all Tampa Bay Lightning jerseys as part of the “Patch With A Purpose” program.
