The Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA states that its mission is to put Judeo-Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. The organization focuses on Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility, and identifies caring, honesty, respect and responsibility as its core values. The Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA is a 501(c)3 nonprofit charitable organization and the YMCA is described as the largest and oldest service organization in America.

The YMCA traces its origins to 1844, when George Williams started the first YMCA in London, and by 1851 there were 24 Ys in Great Britain and new Ys in Montreal and Boston. In 1889, the first YMCA facility in Tampa was built as a 50,000-square-foot building that brought the city its first gymnasium and indoor swimming pool. The Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA notes that each family center now has a pool, some with multiple pools, and all locations have new wellness equipment and a helpful, supportive team.

Licensed Preschool services are offered for ages 2 to 5 years old at two family centers. Tampa YMCA members have unlimited access to all 10 family centers, three wellness centers, and exclusive access to youth and family programs at YMCA Camp Cristina and the Bob Sierra Youth and Family Center. Members also have access to 23 Tampa Bay YMCAs, unlimited exercise classes, and exclusive savings on Summer Camp.

The Tampa YMCA describes its summer offerings with the phrase “Summer Starts at the Y” and notes that Tampa YMCA Summer Camp is filled with new discoveries and shared moments, and that campers feel supported as they try new activities, make friends and grow more confident. The organization partners with the Tampa Bay Lightning as part of the “Patch With A Purpose” program and has a named AdventHealth Community Room at the Spurlino Family YMCA. The Tampa YMCA provides program scholarships and free offerings through community support from individuals and local partnerships, and cites Summer Camp, the Cancer Survivorship Program Powered by Moffitt, Diabetes Prevention, Teen Achievers and Safety Around Water as examples of programs that positively impact community members. A Certified Personal Trainer at the Y is identified among the staff credentials.
