About

theCoderSchool Coding Camps include video game development, game development, and mobile game and app development, along with website building using HTML/CSS and JavaScript. Campers work with Minecraft coding, Roblox game creation and publishing, Obby (obstacle course) building in Roblox Studio, and Lua programming. Camps also feature robotics and robot programming and control, Raspberry Pi mini-computer building and programming, Arduino microcontroller projects with LEDs and sensors, AI and ChatGPT concepts, AI image recognition bots, coding algorithms that mimic computer intelligence, 3D printing, and designing and printing 3D objects, all through interactive, hands-on STEM learning.

• Ages: 8–18 years old
• Schedule: Each day camp runs for a full week, usually starting mid-morning and finishing early afternoon, and some camps are offered as a half-day.

Founded in 2014 and headquartered in Silicon Valley, theCoderSchool states that it believes every kid is unique and treats them that way. Camp instructors are Code Coaches who have successfully gone through theCoderSchool's onboarding process and are coders who teach coding skills to kids. Camps use a low student-to-coach ratio, follow a Code Coaches mentoring philosophy, and include end-of-week student demos to show projects and critical thinking skills. The core program typically uses a super-small 2:1 student-to-teacher ratio, and student-built apps are featured in an App Gallery.

theCoderSchool is a longtime partner of the Congressional App Challenge and collaborates with the Challenge to run a national recognition program to identify top applications from student submissions. It presents a National Top App of the Month selected from hundreds of apps submitted nationwide by students. AppStream is an online weekly video format for new coders, and books have been authored in partnership with Simon Basher from Basher Books. Some camps use physical robots such as mBots or similar in ROBOCODE camp, some locations may allow kids to bring robots home at the end of camp, and some locations may include a Raspberry Pi computer to bring home.

Parent feedback includes comments that the program teaches STEM concepts via coding with a customized curriculum, that instructors are described as exceptional, and that online classes and camps have been described as engaging and fun, with kids creating games and looking forward to returning. Parents from New Jersey, California, Georgia, and Connecticut have shared that their kids enjoyed Scratch camp, online lessons, and online spring break camp, and that their children learned a lot and were very excited about the activities.
