The coaching staff at Above Basketball includes Coach Darwin, who received a Masters degree in Education with a specialty in Physical Education and Coaching from Boston University in 2010 and played three seasons of college basketball at UC Santa Cruz. Darwin has coached boys and girls varsity high school teams at the Waring School in Beverly, Massachusetts, and spent five seasons on the men’s basketball coaching staff at Emmanuel College in Boston, including three years as an assistant and two as associate head coach. He has also worked as an on-air sports broadcaster for ESPN radio in Boston, CBS Sports Radio, and SiriusXM in New York, and continues to provide on-air sports updates for Sirius while hosting a sports podcast, and he played semi-pro football in the New England Football League for two seasons.

Coach Deion played under Jim Martin at Providence, was part of the 2015 State Championship team, and helped lead the team to two final four appearances while setting the school record for steals in a single game. He played two years of college basketball at Albany Tech, earning all-conference honors both years, and finished his college career at Trevecca University. Deion coached during the 2021–22 season as the St. Johns Country Day middle school head coach and as an assistant for the varsity team, and he works primarily with point guards and perimeter players.

Coach Milon Sheffield played point guard at Providence School of Jacksonville from 2014–2016 and helped the team win a State Championship in 2015. He continued his basketball career at Barry University, where he led his team in assists and free throw percentage, and he earned a bachelor’s degree in Sports and Exercise Psychology in 2020 along with a master’s degree in Sports and Exercise Psychology. Coach J’Michael started all four years at Creekside High School, led Creekside to the 2018 State Semifinals, and was named the 2018 Florida Times Union All First Coast Boys Basketball Player of the Year after averaging 13.7 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 4 assists and scoring 1,238 points in high school, before playing college basketball for Florida State College’s Blue Wave.

Coach Gabe played at Bishop Kenny High School as a varsity starter, was named Second Team All-City, received the Vystar All-Star Athlete Award, and was recognized as one of the top players in the state. He committed to play at the Naval Academy and later finished his playing career at Florida Atlantic University. Kyle attended Providence School of Jacksonville, winning a state championship in 2015 and finishing as runner up in 2017, was ranked as a top 100 player in Florida as a senior, and received seven Division I offers before committing and redshirting at the Naval Academy, then transferring to Rollins College. At Rollins College, Kyle finished in the top 20 in scoring with 1,506 points, earned five conference Player of the Week awards, two Defensive Player of the Week awards, and was runner up for Newcomer of the Year, and he graduated with a Bachelor of Biology and a Master of Public Health.

Coach Norman played high school basketball under Jim Martin at Providence, leading the Stallions to a 22–6 record while averaging 15 points per game and shooting over 50% from the three-point line. He went on to play at Illinois Valley, where he averaged over 11 points per game, shot 44% from the three-point line, and 93% from the free throw line as a freshman. Mekhii played for Cornerstone Christian, leading the team to an FICAA State Championship and earning Offensive MVP, then played for Potters House Christian, where he received all-conference honors after averaging 15.6 points and 8.5 rebounds at the SIAA level. He played collegiately at Florida Tech, where he earned the Wayne Cavadi All Stats Team Award after leading NCAA Division II in double-doubles with averages of 15.6 points and 11.6 rebounds during the 2021–2022 season, finished top 8 in rebounds and top 5 in double-doubles all time at Florida Tech, and received MBB Leader of the Year awards and four SSC Student-Athlete Commissioners Awards, before playing professionally in the top division of the British Basketball League for the Plymouth City Patriots.

Coach PJ has been coaching with Above Basketball at WGV since 2022 and holds a Master of Business Administration from Illinois State University with a primary focus on leadership. Coach Taylor graduated from ME Academy in Daytona Beach, Florida, lettered one year in basketball there, and lettered three years in basketball at Creekside High School in St. Johns, Florida. The program lists “Community Partners” as part of its community involvement. The credentials and awards connected to staff and players include the Wayne Cavadi All Stats Team Award, MBB Leader of the Year awards, four SSC Student-Athlete Commissioners Awards, the 2015 State Championship, and the 2018 Florida Times Union All First Coast Boys Basketball Player of the Year.
