About

St. Augustine Yacht Club Sailing Center Youth Programs include Sail Camp, Adventure Camp, Little Skippers Camp, Little Skippers Camp - Extended Day Program, and Introduction to Keelboat Sailing Camp. Depending on the camp, participants take part in sailing, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, swimming, daily challenges, scavenger hunts, picnics, water games, exploring islands, and observing wildlife. Children learn to sail on SailCube, Optimist, 420 and Laser sailboats, experience sailing on multi-hull Hobie Cats and a Flying Scot, and use a J/24 sailboat in the Intro to Keelboat Sailing Camp.

• Ages: 6–17 years old
• Schedule: Weekly summer sessions from June through August, generally Monday–Friday, with most camps running 9:00am–3:00pm and Little Skippers Camp running 9:00am–1:00pm

Since 2012, the sailing program has provided on-water instruction to local youth and has reached over 3,600 local youth, now serving over 300 kids a year. The programs are led by the SAYCSC Sail Director, Marissa Burrier, and are taught by US Sailing certified instructors. The St. Augustine Yacht Club Sailing Center’s mission is to inspire a lifelong love of sailing by providing a safe, fun, and welcoming environment, to provide affordable access to boating for youth in and around St. Augustine, and to make the sport of sailing accessible and inclusive for all. The program states that sailing and boating teach life skills like problem solving, leadership, confidence, and teamwork while having fun on the water, and it identifies core values of kindness, community, responsibility, integrity, consistency, and fun. Programs incorporate STEM curriculum, are open to members and non-members, and are designed to include the diverse community of St. Augustine and St. Johns County, with impactful community outreach partnerships.

Summer Sail Camp is open to all children aged 6–17 and operates annually from June through August in week-long sessions (weeks 1–9), Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 3:00pm. Sail Camp has three levels—Opti I (SailCube), Opti Level II (Optimist), and 420/Laser—and classes are divided by age and skill ability; Opti Level II requires completion of Opti I in 2026 or Sailing Director approval. Sail Camp is the direct feeder to a year-round racing program, Sail Camp participation is required to try out for race team participation, new sailors are only accepted each fall, and multiple weeks are required for race team tryout eligibility. All Sail Camp programs have a limit of 8 slots available, with waitlist registration available and highly encouraged.

Adventure Camp runs all weeks 1–9, Monday to Friday from 9:00am to 3:00pm, and focuses on exploration and adventure on Salt Run rather than teaching children to sail their own boat. Adventure Camp uses kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, sailboats, and more, and includes activities such as daily challenges, scavenger hunts, picnics, water games, exploring islands, and observing wildlife. Adventure Camp has a limit of 8 slots available, with waitlist registration available and highly encouraged.

Little Skippers Camp is offered all weeks 1–9, Monday to Friday from 9:00am to 1:00pm, with smaller class sizes and a limit of 6 slots available. Little Skippers Camp - Extended Day runs Monday to Friday from 1:00pm to 3:00pm and allows Little Skippers participants to stay the full day until 3:00pm.

Introduction to Keelboat Sailing Camp is new for summer 2026 and runs Monday to Friday from 9:00am to 3:00pm in week-long sessions. This camp uses the J/24 sailboat and offers a 10–12 age group and a 13–17 age group, with a limit of 8 slots available and waitlist registration available and highly encouraged.

The St. Augustine Yacht Club Sailing Center notes that both adult and youth programs are open to members and non-members and that it offers a variety of sailing programs for ages 5–95. The City of St. Augustine accepted the donation of the building site for the proposed Sailing Center in 2022, SAYCSC held a Groundbreaking Ceremony on January 21, 2023, and construction began, with programs running off the new dock since June 2025 and plans to move all sailing operations to the new center in Spring 2026. The sailing program reports that it gives over $15,000 in scholarships each year, that scholarships are available, and that it believes no child should be denied access due to financial need. Programs have multi-week discounts, payment in full is required at the time of registration, and registration closes 5 days before each new week starts.
