About
Big Brothers Big Sisters Mentoring Programs pair mentors and youth for one-on-one outings such as taking a walk in the park, going to a museum, listening to music, hanging out and talking, doing homework, reading together, shooting hoops in the gym, and playing on the playground. Matches may also attend events hosted by the local Big Brothers Big Sisters affiliate as part of their time together.
• Ages: 6–18 years old
• Schedule: Some mentors meet with youth on weekends, while others get together on weekday evenings.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is celebrating 120 years of impact. Its mission is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. Big Brothers Big Sisters operates in communities across the United States, in both urban and rural areas. The organization seeks to change the lives of children facing adversity between 6 and 18 years of age, with mentors working with children in the community, in their schools, on military bases, and in other settings. Community-based mentoring pairs mentors and youth for one-on-one outings, and many relationships are part of these community-based programs. School-based mentoring takes place in school settings but is not limited to the classroom. Operation Bigs focuses on providing mentors for children in military families, and mentors in this program can be active or retired military or civilian volunteers. Big Brothers Big Sisters carefully matches mentors and youth for long-term, one-to-one friendships and provides support for mentors, children, and families throughout the life of the match, with the safety and well-being of all youth as the first priority. The National Youth Council is a platform within Big Brothers Big Sisters that enables diverse young leaders to influence programs, engage with partners, and inspire their peers. According to the program’s reported outcomes, youth in Big Brothers Big Sisters are 20% more likely to enroll in college, earn 15% more over their lifetime, and close two-thirds of the economic gap.
