East Atlanta Kids Club was founded in 1998. Its mission is to create year-round out-of-school-time learning for youth placed at-risk by partnering with leading providers and using staff talent and passion for youth development to provide a space where youth can nurture their interests, discover new possibilities, and remain active and engaged to support their mental and physical wellness. The organization offers a Kids Club S.T.E.A.M.-based afterschool program for grades K–5, a Teen Club for grades 6–12, Camp Full STEAM with hands-on activities and makerspace projects, and a Creator Camp for Teen Club members that includes podcasting and digital fabrication tools.
The program schedule follows the APS calendar, with Kids Club meeting Monday through Thursday from 2:30 PM to 6:30 PM during the school year and Teen Club meeting Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM. Camp Full STEAM is offered annually as a six-week program in June and July. Holiday support includes Present-Palooza, a three-day gift distribution event held each December. Food support includes weekly food distribution each Friday.
Present-Palooza procures more than $100,000 worth of gifts and distributes more than 3,000 gifts into the community at a total cost of about $5,000. Weekly food distribution provides more than 120,000 pounds of food, equal to about 100,000 meals and $300,000 worth of grocery support each year. Each week of food distribution puts more than 2,000 meals into the community, with a value between $6,000 and $7,500. Food distribution is paired with healthy eating and food systems programming for youth.
East Atlanta Kids Club supports vulnerable households in southeast Atlanta through weekly food distribution that has been funded by the Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation within the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation and sustained with support from The Imlay Foundation and the East Atlanta Strut. The organization has a history of neighbors hosting birthday fundraisers, organizing rides with kids and the community, leading toy and supply drives, and creating day of service projects. It hosts volunteer groups and offers volunteer roles such as cycling and gardening support, social media marketing, building raised beds, leading culinary arts demonstrations, and helping with building projects. The program also offers field trips, guest speakers, mentors, and hosted or provided field trips such as sporting events, career days, and tours of cultural centers.
The leadership team includes Executive Director Ryan Downey; Program Manager Danielle Erwin; Program Assistant Sabrina Alexander; Lead After School Instructors Sam Sampson and Oscar Hernandez; After School Instructors Airyana Robinson, Victory Williams, and T’Mari Armstead; and Building Assistant Tia Presley-Meade. Ryan Downey holds a B.A. in comparative literature from the University of Georgia, an M.F.A. in English from the University of Notre Dame, and an M.S. in adult, occupational, and continuing education from Kansas State University. The Board of Directors includes Chair Tim Eldredge, Vice-Chair Kristen Vangile, Treasurer Jeff Teves, Secretary Lynn Bonner, and members Uthra Ramaswamy, Brandon Darrington, Dana Nichols, Shanya Dingle, Leeanna Gonzalez, and Justin Krivanek.
