Songs For Kids provides music mentorship and interactive programs for kids and young adults with disabilities, illnesses, and injuries, and focuses on creative expression and exploration in a safe space. The Songs For Kids Center offers a full spectrum of musical instruments to learn and play, along with a professional studio and stage for singing, DJing, and writing and recording songs. The center is described as a barrier-free space where Georgia’s young artists with illnesses, injuries, and disabilities can find their voice and a supportive community of peers, and as a safe space that respects and honors life challenges while fostering a sense of normalcy.

Songs for Kids musicians are dedicated artists trained in hospital procedures, and they perform in-hospital mini concerts and bedside visits. The Songs For Kids Band! is an ensemble of kids and young adults with disabilities and illnesses in the mentorship program and emphasizes teamwork and support among participants. The music mentorship program serves hundreds of kids and their families each year and is planned to reach nearly 4000 sessions in 2025, all free of charge.

Since its founding in 2007, Songs For Kids has provided music programs to kids across the United States and works with thousands of hospitalized and special needs children and their families. In addition to the Songs For Kids Center, the organization has brought music into hospitals across the U.S. since 2007 and currently runs regular programs in children’s hospitals in three states. The Songs For Kids Center is described as a vital community hub that bridges the gap between hospital-based interventions, schools, disability opportunities, and long-term care and development.

The leadership team includes Justin Kerenyi (President), Ryan Radding (Treasurer), Elyse Klova (Secretary), and Josh Rifkind (Founder/Executive Director). The organization notes that it has been “enthusiastically flipping that script” for 19 years at Songs For Kids and opened the Songs For Kids Center in January 2019.

Parents describe the program as a place where their children are not defined by disability and where music mentor relationships are important to their kids. One parent shares that her child looks forward to working with a music mentor twice a week and remembers upcoming visits despite memory challenges. Another parent notes that her child, who has dwarfism, is treated on-age and is excited enough about visits to set an alarm early in the morning. A third parent explains that staff are “always looking for new things” their child can do, ordering instruments like a xylophone when requested and exposing him to things he would not otherwise access. Another parent reports that staff listen to the path her child wants to take, quickly assess where he is, and keep encouraging him, and that he has gone on to perform at his youth group’s open house.
