The Music Class Inc. is an early childhood music education company that offers research-based music and movement classes for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers, with programs designed to unleash the musical potential of infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. It is an international program based in Atlanta, is family-owned and operated, and has over 1,000 locations and 75,000 students worldwide. The founder, Rob Sayer, started The Music Class in 1998 and still teaches his own classes every week in addition to running the company, and the office staff either teach The Music Class themselves or attended classes with their own children. The leadership team includes founder and director Rob Sayer, COO and director of TMC in China Raina Sayer, and Executive Vice President of Operations and Technology David Wetzel, who oversees all aspects of the Atlanta center and works directly with international centers.
Many Atlanta teachers can be heard on the award-winning recordings families receive in class, and the recordings feature Grammy-nominated musicians and musical styles like rock, jazz, opera, and traditional songs from all over the world. The song collections expose children to a wide variety of musical styles, and the recordings feature Rob, Raina, and many TMC teachers, students, and alumni. All TMC programs are research-based and designed to teach children in the ways they learn best, and the company states core values of quality and inclusivity, embracing families from all cultures and backgrounds and standing against racism in both classrooms and music.
The teaching staff includes Berné Poliakoff, who has been a TMC teacher since 2000, majored in Voice at the College of Charleston, has been a professional musician her entire adult life in styles such as Folk, Jazz, Western Swing, Classic Country, and Rockabilly, and is a songwriter; Bowen Hoadley, who has a BA in Music from Georgia State University, has taught music in the Atlanta area for over a decade, and is Music Specialist at Sagamore Hills Elementary teaching General Music, Band, Orchestra, and Chorus; and David Wetzel, a Berklee College of Music graduate who manages day-to-day operations of the corporate office and oversees the Atlanta center. Other instructors include Doris Seiden, who holds a B.F.A. and M.F.A. in Dance from NYU School of the Arts, directs Family Keyboard Classes, Inc., co-founded and choreographs for Calck Hook Dance Theatre, and teaches yoga, drama, and classical piano; Heather Blank, who performed with the Women’s Glee Club and Noteworthy Women’s Ensemble while earning a BA in Telecommunications at UGA and worked in television for over 10 years; and Hope Earley, who majored in Early Childhood Education at UGA, has long experience working with children including leading a church children’s music program, teaching in daycares, nannying for seven years, and who played trumpet in band for seven years and marched mellophone in high school marching band.
The Music Class states that it works very closely with all of its center directors around the world. The company describes itself as having a small office team based in Atlanta and as a family business. The program offers both “mommy and me” style classes and a preschool music curriculum.
Parent reviews describe teachers as enthusiastic and engaging and mention that families have attended multiple sessions over several years. Reviews from parents in Dunwoody, Smyrna, Suwanee, and Johns Creek mention children enjoying the classes, singing the songs at home, and using the music books and instruments outside of class. One parent notes that The Music Class offered virtual classes and open webinars during the COVID-19 shutdown in 2020.
