UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant began as a marine extension service program in 1970 and was formally established under the University of Georgia in 1971. In 1980, the U.S. Department of Commerce designated UGA as the nation’s 15th Sea Grant College Program under section 207 of the National Sea Grant Program Act. For over 50 years, UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant has served the state through research, education, and extension services. The main administrative office hosts the director of UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant, Mark Risse.

Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant’s stated mission is to improve the environmental, social, and economic health of the Georgia coast through research, education, and extension. It operates through a federal–state partnership between the University of Georgia and NOAA’s National Sea Grant College Program, which is a network of 34 Sea Grant programs in coastal and Great Lakes states and territories. The facility hosts school groups from across the state and beyond throughout the year and participates in Earth Day Savannah, described as an annual community celebration focused on environmental sustainability and conservation in the Coastal Empire. The site also includes the state’s first oyster hatchery at the Shellfish Research Lab.
