Zookeeper Summer Camp
Summerfield Farm and Zoo, 3088 Flora Rd., Belvidere, IL 61008
About
Zookeeper Summer Camp gives campers the chance to learn about zookeeping and the animals that call the zoo home through game time, craft time, animal presentations, and animal-themed games and crafts. Campers take part in special interactions with specific animals, including baby goat feedings, pictures with the animal ambassador of their choice, and animal scavenger hunts. They also learn about feeding, care, and enrichment by making animal enrichment projects, creating toys and treats for the animals, and doing age-appropriate and safe chores that zookeepers do every day, such as feeding and cleaning.
• Ages: 6–12 years old
• Schedule: Full-day summer camp from 9 am to 3 pm, offered across seven weeks in June and July
• Price: Full Day Summer Camp 9 am to 3 pm is $300 per week; the June 30–July 3 four-day week is $255
Summerfield Zoo states that its main objective is to provide a fun and educational experience for the whole family. Many of the resident animals are rescue animals from the Northern Illinois area. The organization notes that visits, donations, gift shop purchases, and snack shop purchases help build and maintain exhibits and feed the animals, including many rescues. The farm has bred and raised Arabian horses for over 40 years and mentions having national winning horses at Summerfield Farm. The camp is described as “Back by Popular Demand,” offers seven fun-filled weeks of summer camp, limits enrollment each week, and notes that summer day camps do not have to be taken in order and have no prerequisites.
