WDSRA offers engaging community-based social and recreational programs for individuals of all ages with special needs. Programs include competitive and recreational athletics, Special Olympics, adaptive sports, music, dance, art, theater, social clubs, camps, trips, special events and more. Programs are designed with a close staff to participant ratio, and there is no additional cost for participants to receive inclusion services. WDSRA offers assistance to any individual with a disability who registers for a park district program from any of their member districts through Inclusion Services, and offers both Inclusion Services and WDSRA programs so participants can choose whichever option fits them best.

Staff credentials include Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, Certified Parks and Recreation, and Crisis Prevention Institute certified. Many staff are certified in CPR, First Aid, and are Crisis Prevention Institute trained. Program leadership includes Program Manager Emily Ackerman and Marketing/PR Manager Sherry Manschot.

The Western DuPage Special Recreation Association (WDSRA) was established in 1976. WDSRA is a nationally acclaimed, award-winning organization and a leader in the special recreation field, with a 50 year track record as leaders in the field with innovative programming. WDSRA serves residents across nine communities: Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Glen Ellyn, Naperville, Roselle, Warrenville, West Chicago, Wheaton, and Winfield, and is a cooperative extension of each community’s park district. WDSRA is sending a shout-out to Carol Stream Park District for being part of their 50-year celebration.

The mission of WDSRA is: “We enrich lives, connect communities and create fun through inclusive recreational opportunities.” One WDSRA parent shared, “Without WDSRA, I would not have a minute to myself and Alex would not have the opportunity to enjoy kids her own age.”

Registration for camps uses a lottery that is spun on 4/7/25. Health and emergency information is managed through ePact. Certain forms are required to participate, including registering with ePact and the Day Camp Code of Conduct, and completing the forms does not mean a participant is registered for camp.
