About

Champaign Park District Youth Theatre introduces children to live theatrical presentation through activities such as acting, singing, set-design, prop creation, selecting costumes, understanding stage directions, and proper use of stage make up. Each program includes work toward a live stage musical that is presented over a period of 2–3 days. Every child who registers for the program is cast in a part, and young performers at all experience levels are encouraged to register. Youth Theatre’s past shows have included Hadestown: Teen Edition, Beetlejuice, Alice and Wonderland Jr., Beauty and the Beast, Footloose, The Lightning Thief, Jungle Book KIDS, Addams Family, Willy Wonka Jr., High School Musical, Mary Poppins, The Wiz Jr., and others.

• Schedule: Each program culminates in a live stage musical presented over a period of 2–3 days.

Each program begins with a Parent Meeting after registration, where details about the audition and rehearsal process are shared. The Youth Theatre Staff are described as expert in drama, comedy, choreography, and music and as having extensive early educational experience. The program’s stated mission is to give young children the opportunity to learn the basics of live theatrical presentation on the stage of a freshly-restored historic theatre. The Virginia Theatre, where performances are held, has been a prominent landmark and entertainment hub since 1921 and is owned and operated by the Champaign Park District with support from donations to the Champaign Parks Foundation.
