About
Champaign Park District Youth Theatre introduces children to live theatrical presentation through activities such as acting, singing, set-design, prop creation, selecting costumes, understanding stage directions, and proper use of stage make up. Each program culminates in a live stage musical presented at the Virginia Theatre over a period of 2–3 days in front of a large and lively audience. Every child who registers for the program is cast in a part, and young performers at all experience levels are encouraged to register.
• Schedule: Each program begins with a Parent Meeting (following registration) where details about the audition and rehearsal process are shared.
Since 1921, the Virginia Theatre has been a prominent landmark and entertainment hub in downtown Champaign and east central Illinois. The Champaign Park District Youth Theatre program states that it gives young children the opportunity to learn the basics of live theatrical presentation on the stage of a freshly restored historic theatre. Youth Theatre staff are described as expert in the fields of drama, comedy, choreography, and music and as having extensive early educational experience. Youth Theatre’s past shows have included Hadestown: Teen Edition, Beetlejuice, Alice in Wonderland Jr., Beauty and the Beast, Footloose, The Lightning Thief, Jungle Book KIDS, Addams Family, Willy Wonka Jr., High School Musical, Mary Poppins, The Wiz Jr., and many more. The Virginia Theatre is owned and operated by the Champaign Park District with support from donations to the Champaign Parks Foundation.
