By The Hand Club For Kids is a Christ-centered, after-school program that walks with kids from kindergarten through college. The program focuses on nurturing the whole child—mind, body and soul—and serves more than 2,000 kids from Cabrini-Green, Altgeld-Murray, Austin, North Austin and Englewood. Annual events include Bike Across Chicago, a Christmas in the City trip, and an ABC Party at Six Flags Great America to celebrate good grades.

By The Hand began in 2001 with 16 children from Cabrini-Green and has celebrated 25 consecutive years since it first opened its doors to those 16 students on March 20. The mission of By The Hand is to be a Christ-centered, after-school program that takes kids by the hand and walks with them from kindergarten through college, loving and nurturing them—mind, body and soul. By The Hand Club For Kids is a 501(c)(3). The leadership team includes Interim Site Director Davina Wilson at Altgeld-Murray, Site Director Eddie Wilson at Austin, Site Director Joshua Wheeler at Cabrini-Green, Site Director Bethany Watson at Englewood, Site Director Jeffrey Jamison at Moving Everest/Austin, and Site Director Yasenia Roman at North Austin. One student described the experience by saying, “It’s a blessing to be here.”
By The Hand currently serves more than 2,000 children from Cabrini-Green, Altgeld-Murray, Austin, North Austin and Englewood. Its locations are described as being strategically located throughout some of Chicago’s most dangerous and under-resourced neighborhoods. The North Austin Center is described as a world-class campus for education, sports, and wellness on Chicago’s West Side, aimed at reversing decades of disinvestment. Austin Harvest grew out of a desire for youth to lead the way for positive community change, and Austin Harvest partners with Beyond Hunger to feed neighbors in need. Bowen Harvest is described as Chicago’s only youth-led container farm, bringing sustainable youth-led solutions to food access for Altgeld. Lou Malnati’s has hosted a community event for 17 years, filling each basket with Thanksgiving meals for Chicago families in need, including 360 By The Hand families. By The Hand supporters bike 50 miles to support youth in the 7th annual Bike Across Chicago, joined by State Rep. La Shawn Ford.
