ChampYon TaeKwonDo USA Academy is a family-owned martial arts academy that has been servicing the East Side of Chicago since 1982 and has been teaching and promoting TaeKwonDo for 42 years. The program includes an athletically focused approach that revolves around competitive Taekwondo with Olympic-style training and participation in local and nationwide tournaments. The academy reports 243+ current members, participation in more than 20 tournaments per year, 129 five-star reviews, and 31 black belts since 2020. Grandmaster Luciano Medina is the CEO of ChampYon TaeKwonDo USA Academy, President of Champion Taekwondo International Union, and served as the USAT Illinois Tae Kwon Do State Association President from 2008 to 2015. He has over 45 years of experience in martial arts, is a 5-time state champion and 6-time U.S. grand champion, and has been teaching since 1982. His roles have included trainer of many state, national, and international champions; former Taekwondo Director of the Illinois Institute of Technology Champion M.A.G; former technical director of more than 20 schools in Mexico; coach for many national and international events; head coach for TEAM CHAMPYON USA; instructor for the 2024 Olympic Taekwondo Training at the Kukkiwon 115th International Master Course in Chicago; and coach for Costa Rica at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games.

Grandmaster Medina has been promoted to 8th Dan by World Taekwondo Jidokwan (Korea) and inducted into the Official Taekwondo Hall of Fame. He has been awarded development coach of the year by the United States Olympic Committee, received a special award from the President of World Taekwondo Federation Kukkiwon, and serves as a certified USA Taekwondo and US Olympic Committee level one USA coach. He is also a national referee certified by the United States Taekwondo Union (USTU). Since 1989, he has been the tournament director of the USA ChampYon International Taekwondo Championships.

ChampYon TaeKwonDo USA Academy states its mission as: “We are cultivating a family and community oriented institute that exemplify the TaeKwonDo tenets while educating students to be true martial artists on and off the mats.” The academy has received a Selected Business Leader Award from the East Side Chamber of Commerce and an achievement award in City Hall from President of the Cook County Board of Commissioners Tony Preckwinkle and Commissioner 4th District Stanley Moor.

One parent, Veronica Ramirez, shared that she was initially skeptical about taking her son to a Taekwondo class but described it as the best experience for her son and family. She stated that her son loves to learn new things, has made new friends, and has improved his elasticity and persona, and she noted that the instructors, owners, and parents have made their family feel like they have another family in their Taekwondo world.
