About

Chicago Human Rhythm Project Education Programs include concerts, classes, after school arts education classes, residencies, workshops, outreach programs, and conferences for the field. The programs also feature the lecture demonstration “We All Got Rhythm” presented by the resident performance and education ensemble Stone Soup Rhythms.

Chicago Human Rhythm Project Education Programs are co-founded by Lane Alexander and Kelly Michaels. Chicago Human Rhythm Project presents rhythm-culture in performances, education programs and community development initiatives that foster great art, social reconciliation and economic justice. Its resident ensemble Stone Soup Rhythms provides after school arts education classes at three elementary schools: St. Sabina, Paul Revere and Bronzeville Lighthouse, and has presented “We All Got Rhythm” to more than 60,000 school children over five years. Chicago Human Rhythm Project presents programs throughout the year that bring diverse individuals and communities together and promotes cultural diversity, emphasizing collaboration and partnership among Chicago artists and communities. As of 2022, Chicago Human Rhythm Project has awarded $350,000 in scholarships to deserving and talented youths for summer study programs over a period of 27 years. Chicago Human Rhythm Project received an Emmy nomination and national airings for its co-production with WTTW of “JUBA! Masters of Tap and Percussive Dance,” has been cited by Dance Magazine and the New York Times for leadership and innovation in the field, and earned a National Endowment for the Arts American Masterpieces Grant in 2007 administered by the Illinois Arts Council. Chicago Human Rhythm Project’s summer festival is the oldest and most comprehensive annual tap festival in the world and was the first tap festival to evolve into a year-round presenter of tap and percussive dance. Through its programs, Chicago Human Rhythm Project designs programs that empower artists and strengthen communities through Sustained, Integrated, Equitable, Cultural Investments and has donated concert proceeds to Open Hand/Chicago, a meals-on-wheels program serving people affected by HIV/AIDS.
