Since 2006, Chicago Adventure Therapy (CAT) has used outdoor adventure sports with Chicago children, youth, young adults, and families to build leadership and social skills, foster empowerment, and create lasting positive change in their communities. Chicago Adventure Therapy Programs is a Chicago-based nonprofit that focuses on making the outdoors accessible to communities who have been historically excluded from natural spaces, especially Black, brown, LGBTQ+, and low-income young people. The organization centers culturally responsive and trauma-informed practices and leverages outdoor adventure as a tool for healing, leadership development, and mental health wellness.
The program offers Adventure Communities to ensure that youth participants, regardless of their involvement with partner organizations, maintain access to outdoor adventure experiences. It also offers Family Adventures at no cost and Community Festivals where the team sets up at parks, block parties, and other community events, providing gear for hands-on experiences. After School Programming includes on-site sessions for outdoor education, nature reflections, and skill-building activities.
Chicago Adventure Therapy Programs collaborates with youth-serving organizations to offer outdoor adventure experiences for their clients, often through partnerships with other nonprofit agencies, while also welcoming individuals and families. The organization states that it values and promotes diversity and inclusion regardless of race, ethnicity, citizenship status, gender, sexual orientation, gender identification or expression, body type, ability, income, religion, philosophy, and other identities represented in Chicago. The leadership team includes Executive Director Zorbari Nwidor. The organization describes its history as originally focused on clinically driven models of individual treatment using adventure sports as tools for therapeutic intervention, and in 2019 it integrated a trauma-informed, community-embedded approach to social and emotional learning into its programming, evolving into a community-led movement centering healing, belonging, and mental wellness for Black, brown, and other marginalized youth throughout Chicago.
A testimonial from the program compares the work of Chicago Adventure Therapy to an outdoor journey that can be thrilling and a little scary, describing CAT’s role as helping young people navigate the scary parts, teaching that discomfort can lead to growth, and showing that they have the power to transform their lives and their communities.
