About

Nature Museum Camps immerse children in the world of nature and science through interactive exploration that includes science and art projects, nature play, animal encounters, and outdoor and indoor fun. Campers observe the natural world around them, grow their comfort with scientific skills, and explore the outside world around them, the museum, local habitats, many living things nearby, and the exhibits. During camp, children also have outdoor play time and chances to create.

For over 167 years, the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum of the Chicago Academy of Sciences has connected people of all ages to nature and science through immersive exhibits, fun family events, conservation research, and in-depth education programs. The Chicago Academy of Sciences was founded in 1857, became Chicago’s first public museum in 1869, and opened the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum on October 23, 1999. The museum is known for its iconic Judy Istock Butterfly Haven and for providing more hands-on science instruction than any other museum in Chicago.

Nature Museum Camps acknowledge the support of the Chicago Park District on behalf of the people of Chicago. Daily Parent Pages are written by the camp directors and include photos, a summary of the day’s accomplishments, and questions to spark conversation with campers. The program encourages campers to take the lead and gives them space to explore the nature of Chicago at their own pace with tools selected or built by them.
