About
Hannaberry Farm Summer Riding Camp offers hands-on equestrian days that include riding lessons focusing on balance, control and technique, as well as horsemanship instruction with non-mounted horse-related activities. Campers take part in chores, games on horseback, bareback rides, trail classes, equine art projects, and guest presenter sessions. Many campers also participate in in-house shows, a 3 Day Eventing camp, and schooling horse shows in dressage and jumping.
• Ages: 7–18 years old
• Schedule: Day camp sessions run from 9:45 a.m.–3:30 p.m., with activities beginning at 10:00 a.m., across multiple 3-day and 5-day sessions in June, July, and August 2026.
• Price: 5 Day Camp: $725 per rider; 3 Day Camp: $450 per rider; 3 Day Eventing Camp and Show Prep Camp: $475 per rider for 3 days (plus trailering fees when applicable); Ages 12+ advanced riders: $175 per individual day; van service from Chicago: $200 per week per camper for 5 day camp or $125 per week per camper for 3 day camp.
Classes are under the direction of Denise Berry-Hanna, a Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA) master trainer in English riding, and all instruction is in English riding. The program is described as a private barn that focuses on personalized instruction, with a ratio of rider to instructors usually 1:4 or less and riders divided into groups by age and skill level, from beginner to advanced, with advanced riders able to focus on dressage or jumping. Hannaberry Farm offers year-round equestrian programs for all ages, including lease and share-board opportunities for riders in the program, two annual schooling shows in dressage and jumping, all winter lessons in a spacious indoor domed arena, and periodic clinics with nationally recognized equestrian professionals in a variety of disciplines.
Campers are asked to bring sack lunches each day, and each afternoon an ice cream or non-dairy treat is provided before pick up. Tuition includes one camp t-shirt per student, and a second child from the same family receives a $50 discount per camp session. To hold a spot, families must send a 50% deposit before April 1, all attendees must sign a current release form, and van slots from Chicago with pick up in Hyde Park are first come, first served and require a deposit.
The mission statement for Hannaberry Farm notes that lessons are geared to all levels of recreational rider and that the program was designed to cater to riders with busy lives or jobs that do not allow a full-time horse hobby, with an emphasis on teaching horse care, safety, grooming, and show prep in tandem with riding skills and horsemanship as an integral part of the program. The program states that it aims to build a bond between horse and rider, to develop riders’ love of horses, and that its goal is for every rider to develop confidence and independence through equestrian activities, with a focus on safe, kind horse interaction and helping each student find a unique connection with the horses.
One testimonial states that “Denise does such a great job with growing young riders through lessons and camps” and mentions being impressed by “the amazing little riders at her place.” Another testimonial from an adult rider describes Hannaberry Farm as “a nonjudgmental place to explore my childhood dreams,” and says that Denise is “patient, and so knowledgeable” and that “all the stress in my life disappear[s] the second I step out of my car.” A third testimonial describes Denise as “an incredible trainer” who is “great with riders of all ages and all levels,” notes that she “treats animals and humans with respect,” that “her barn is well-maintained,” and that she “develops a real community of riding enthusiasts.”
