Decatur Community Dance

Decatur Community Dance offers Creative Movement, Ballet/Tap/Tumbling, Kids Hip Hop, Ballet I, Ballet II & III, Beginning Ballet/Tap, Beginning/Intermediate Jazz, Ballet IV/V, Youth Hip Hop, Intermediate Tap, Adult Ballet, and Teen/Adult Hip Hop & Tap. Classes meet on Monday through Sunday during Fall Session, Spring Session, and Summer Session, and mid-session drop-ins are welcome.

Programs

• Creative Movement — 2-4 yrs old · Wed 3:00 PM-3:30 PM · $79.50 per session · Introduces basic motor skills, fun and creative movement, uses props and toys, and includes activities and dance games.
• Ballet/Tap/Tumbling — 3-6 years old · Wed 3:30 PM-4:30 PM · $134.50 per session · Introductory class in ballet, tap, and tumbling; teaches posture, grace, coordination, dancing to the beat, and flexibility.
• Kids Hip Hop — 3-6 years old · Thu 3:45 PM-4:30 PM · $109.50 per session · Introduction to Hip-Hop for young students; breaks down the basics of Hip-Hop.
• Ballet I — 4-6 yrs old · Tue 4:00 PM-4:45 PM · $134.50 per session · Introduction to correct posture and technique, ballet vocabulary, short combinations, and beginning character dance.
• Ballet II & III — 6-8 years old · Tue 4:45 PM-5:45 PM · $134.50 per session · Students progress in steps, turns, combinations, character dance, and vocabulary for ballet.
• Beginning Ballet/Tap — 7-10 years old · Wed 4:30 PM-5:30 PM · $134.50 per session · For beginners with some dance experience; further develops ballet and tap vocabulary with emphasis on technique.
• Beginning/Intermediate Jazz — 7-13 years old · Mon 6:00 PM-7:00 PM · $134.50 per session · Introduces basic jazz skills with exercises in the centre and across the floor.
• Ballet IV/V — 8-12 yrs old · Tue 5:45 PM-7:15 PM · $154.50 per session · Advances the student with more difficult barre and centre exercises, increases vocabulary, and introduces beats.
• Youth Hip Hop — Thu 4:30 PM-5:30 PM · $134.50 per session · A high energy class to further a student's Hip-Hop knowledge.
• Intermediate Tap — 10-adult · Mon 4:15 PM-5:00 PM · $109.50 per session · For students with a good knowledge of tap vocabulary and steps; learns more advanced tap combinations and choreography.
• Adult Ballet — 12-Adult · Tue 7:15 PM-8:15 PM · $134.50 per session · Designed for adults with varied levels of prior ballet experience who want to expand or refresh skills.
• Teen/Adult Hip Hop & Tap — 13 yrs old-Adult · Wed 5:30 PM-6:30 PM · $134.50 per session · High energy dance class for first-time dancers or those with several years of experience.

• General schedule: Classes run Monday through Sunday. Classes are offered 3 times per year: Fall Session August to December, Spring Session January to May, and Summer Session June to July. Mid-session drop-ins are welcome.

About the provider

Nancy McReynolds is the Artistic Director. The leadership team also includes Amy Ziettlow, Chelsea White, Jan Taylor, Melissa Girardi, Yulia Dichenko and Matthew Heinemann, and Jennifer Power. Melissa Girardi started dancing with Decatur Community Dance in 1998 and started teaching in 2014. Jennifer Power returned to dancing at Decatur Community Dance in January 2018, and Yulia Dichenko and Matthew Heinemann started in January 2024. Both students and community members are welcome to audition for a role in The Nutcracker, and all students enrolled in DCD classes are encouraged to participate in the Spring Dance Recital.

Classes have specific starting and ending dates. Registration prior to the start of a session is encouraged, but mid-session drop-ins are always welcome. Doctor's permission note must be on file for Beginning/Intermediate Pointe. No class the day before Thanksgiving for the Wednesday schedule and no class on Thanksgiving for the Thursday schedule.
