Youth Summer STEAM Camp includes activities such as coding, game design, app development, virtual reality, designing Minecraft characters and objects, learning to code in HTML and JavaScript, and creating virtual worlds. At this camp, students explore science, technology, engineering, art and math through engaging and interactive experiences. The camp is offered through Oakton’s Adult, Continuing Education, and Workforce Development office.
• Ages: 8–14 years old
Every year, Oakton College welcomes young people between ages 8 and 14 for a summer of learning and fun. This youth college program offers classes in fields like coding, game design, app development, virtual reality and more, and includes many interactive and fully online courses. Attendees are described as having a fun, yet academically engaging and virtual experience.
Since its founding in 1969, Oakton College has offered innovative and unique learning programs for youth. The Youth Summer STEAM Camp takes place on a college campus. Oakton College’s mission states that education is powerful and life-changing, that everyone deserves a supportive and equitable learning environment where they can thrive, and that connection to people, ideas and opportunity is the best path to success. The program is part of a college that is a federally designated Minority Serving Institution. The leadership team includes Jesse Ivory, dean of Adult and Continuing Education and dean of the Skokie campus. Oakton is one of 48 colleges in the Illinois community college system serving more than 600,000 students yearly, has more than 100 company partnerships for internships, job placement and corporate training, and is part of a system where 9 of 10 Illinois community college graduates stay in the state, bolstering the local workforce and contributing to their communities.
