About
Galena ARC Summer Camp includes fun weekly themes with a variety of planned activities at the ARC, along with indoor activities in the air-conditioned gymnasium and in the dance/fitness room. Campers go on field trips, play at the park, attend the Galena Public Pool three afternoons per week, and have special lunches brought into the ARC. The program also includes a summer sports program, dance classes, and karate classes.
• Ages: 3–12 years old
• Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., with drop-off from 7:00–9:00 a.m.
Families can choose every week of camp or just the weekly themes that interest their child, and parents can choose how many days per week their child attends. Space is limited and registrations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis. A sack lunch from home must be provided, and all registration forms and State of Illinois forms must be filled out and turned in for registration to be complete.
The Galena ARC has a fully dedicated art wing, a wellness wing, and a classroom for infants, toddlers, and 2-year-olds, and it has the capability of providing childcare for infants to twelve-year-olds. In 2023, the organization replaced the gym floor and added adjustable basketball hoops to the gym. The child care director is Sonya Bussan, and the teachers are described as highly qualified, caring individuals.
The organization’s mission is to promote individual independence and cooperation; to develop community cooperation in programs and activities which further arts/crafts, sports, and recreation for all ages; and to create a friendly, respectful social environment based on self esteem, discipline, fairness, equality and responsibility, collectively for the health, safety and welfare of all including family persons, groups and visitors. Together, volunteers and donors have improved the lives of children and adults in the community, and a full community-backed multi-year capital campaign supported the 2019 relocation and expansion of programming.
