About

Bridge Communities Tutoring Program offers one-to-one tutoring and mentoring for high-risk students. All children in the program have experienced homelessness, and many may have experienced domestic violence or attended many different schools. The program includes mentoring, housing, and supportive services for families facing homelessness.

• Schedule: Students meet with their tutors once or twice each week, for one hour each session.

Bridge Communities states that its mission is to transition families facing homelessness to self-sufficiency by working with partners to provide mentoring, housing, and supportive services. Bridge Communities provides free transitional housing to more than 100 DuPage County families experiencing homelessness each year and serves over 100 families every year in its program of housing, mentoring, and empowering families. The organization reports that, among its 2024 client graduates, 85% secured permanent housing, 91% grew their savings, 67% increased their income, and 91% decreased their debt.

Bridge Communities is in need of certified teachers and volunteers with tutoring experience for this program. The tutoring takes place in Learning Resource Centers located in Glen Ellyn, Glendale Heights, Naperville and Westmont, or other Tutor Centers in Glen Ellyn, Addison and Woodridge. Bridge Communities works in partnership with local faith-based and community action groups in providing transitional housing to families that live and work in DuPage County, and partners with dozens of for-profit businesses and non-profit organizations to create a system that encourages self-sufficiency, long-term change, and compassionate care.

Bridge Communities has been ranked as a 4-Star charity by Charity Navigator, was voted Non-Profit of the Year in the Glen Ellyn Community Awards run by the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce, and has earned Candid's Platinum Seal of Transparency. Reflections from clients include: “I will be forever grateful to have met all of you,” “Bridge Communities prepared me for a better life,” “Because of you, I'm not a statistic,” “I never thought I could be this happy,” and “I’m taking control of my life again.” Mary Slade is listed as a contact for more information about the Bridge Communities Tutoring Program at [email protected].
