An elected Board of Commissioners consisting of seven members serves as the governing body of the Park District, and commissioners serve four-year unpaid terms. The District maintains 29 parks, operates 21 playground structures, and maintains over 300 acres of open space, and each year it offers more than 700 programs and special events. The Glen Ellyn Park District is tax-supported, with annual taxes supporting approximately 45% of District operations and the rest generated through user fees. The District states that its mission is to foster diverse, community-based leisure opportunities through a blend of recreation programs, facilities, and open space that will enhance quality of life into the future. The Glen Ellyn Park District describes itself as playing a vital role in enhancing people’s lives and creating a more connected community and notes that it has been a vital part of the community since 1919.
