Camp I Am Me Summer Camp marks its 35th Anniversary and is a special one-week camping experience for children and teenagers who have experienced injuries from burns. The program is described as a safe, non-judgmental environment for young burn survivors to build their self-esteem and self-confidence, share common experiences, and play without feeling self-conscious about their scars. It offers a variety of specialized workshops that address the specific needs of young burn survivors and maintains a nearly 1:1 counselor to camper ratio. Since 1991, Summer Camp has been providing this safe, non-judgmental summer camp environment for children, and since 1989, Camp I Am Me has offered safe, non-judgmental environments for burn survivors through various programs.
In addition to YMCA counselors, the Summer Camp is staffed by volunteers that include many medical professionals, fire service personnel, and former burn camp campers. The staff participates in professional development and orientation sessions that prepare them to address the specific needs of burn survivors and to build a cohesive team. The leadership team includes Leslie Metcalf, Program Coordinator; Jenny Tzortzos, Community Outreach Coordinator; and Philip Zaleski, Executive Director.
Camp I Am Me, together with volunteers and supporters from the fire service, health care sector, private industry, and the general public, works to deliver assistance, strength, and happiness to children, adults, and families in the burn survivor community. Camp I Am Me also develops and distributes no-cost fire safety and burn prevention materials throughout the state to community partners such as fire departments, hospitals, and schools. Camp I Am Me provides a wide variety of free programs throughout the year for children, adults, and families affected by burn-related injuries, and its programs are offered throughout the entire year and across Illinois and beyond.
