About

Allerton Youth Programs include activities such as running among the Fu Dogs, reflecting with a nature journal, and throwing sticks in the Sangamon River. The programs feature Summer Day Camp, an Annual Family Campout and Exploration, and field trips where participants can hike with biologists, see wildlife up-close, relax by the campfire, and sleep under the stars or in a tent.

• Ages: 5–11 years old
• Schedule: Park hours are 8 a.m. to sunset, with front desk hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Allerton Youth Programs state that their mission is to connect children with the beauty and art of nature, beginning a lifelong relationship and fostering appreciation for the natural world. Summer Day Camp gets children outside all day to discover art, nature, and science through hands-on exploration, with campers split into two age groups: 5 to 7-year-olds (Acorns) and 8 to 11-year-olds (Adventurers). The Annual Family Campout and Exploration is described as a hassle-free camping experience that includes opportunities to hike with biologists and see wildlife up-close. School groups are welcome to visit year-round for self-guided outings, and teachers can conduct hands-on lessons of multiple subjects with nature, art, and history converging in one place. All courses at The Farms are facilitated by and for members of the community, and The Farms is noted as the first folk school in Illinois, connected to a folk school ideology that started in Denmark in the mid-1800s by Nikolai Frederik Severin Grudtvig and is credited with supporting Denmark’s transition to democracy from a monarchy. Park information notes that if a group arrives by bus, parking is available in the Main Parking Lot, which has access to picnic tables, restrooms, and water fountains.
