IAJHSC Summer Leadership Camp
4-H Memorial Camp/Allerton Park, 499 Old Timber Rd., Monticello, IL 61856
About
IAJHSC Summer Leadership Camp includes daily recreation such as swimming, boating, archery, volleyball, and crafts. Evening activities include country line dancing, olympics, watching a movie, and a luau, and the final night features a banquet, achievement night, a candle lighting ceremony, and time to reflect and sing around the campfire. During the week, each delegate is assigned to a mock Student Council that elects officers, establishes committees, and meets at least once a day with Senior Staff and Junior Counselors.
• Ages: 11–13 years old
• Schedule: One-week session, June 21–27, 2026
• Price: The price for IAJHSC member schools is $500 per delegate and for non-member schools is $550 per delegate, including lodging, three meals a day, evening snacks, program materials, and a camp t-shirt.
Junior High/Middle School students who will be entering grades 6, 7, or 8 in the fall may attend IAJHSC Summer Leadership Camp, and students who have attended once may attend a second time if their student council advisor believes it will be beneficial. Delegates are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until the camp session reaches capacity, and they are typically not housed with other students from their home school. Cabins have bunk beds with foam rubber mattresses, and delegates must provide their own bedding.
During the week of camp, each mock Student Council includes 15–20 students from different schools and has responsibilities to complete throughout camp. General Sessions are held each day for all camp delegates and include topics such as job training and brainstorming, and Senior Staff presents information about planning agendas, project planning, parliamentary procedure, and evaluation during council meetings. Recreation is held at least once a day, and the camp store is open during recreation so delegates may purchase snacks.
Camp is operated under the leadership of the Camp Director by Senior Staff and Junior Counselors, and there is a full-time nurse on staff. Senior Staff is made up of student council advisors and former Junior Counselors, and Junior Counselors are described as a carefully selected group of highly capable, responsible, and enthusiastic young leaders who previously attended the IAJHSC Leadership Camp as junior high/middle school students. The Camp Director is Leanne Rohn, and the Executive Director of the IAJHSC is Lisa Thompson.
The purpose of the IAJHSC Summer Leadership Camp is to provide opportunities for delegates to gain leadership skills, a deeper understanding of the democratic process, and to participate in the exchange of ideas to bring to their home school communities. The IAJHSC has been building leaders for 54 years and has existed since 1958. The IAJHSC is described as the official summer camp of @iajhscstuco and as the sole organization of its kind in Illinois dedicated to empowering middle school student leaders and their advisors, emphasizing leadership, service, scholarship, integrity, responsibility, caring, compassion, and good character. The IAJHSC theme for the 2025–2026 school year is “7 Wonders of Leadership.”
The IAJHSC offers opportunities for community service and is a statewide association dedicated to empowering middle school student leaders and their advisors and fostering a community where leadership, service, and scholarship thrive. Each year the IAJHSC presents awards including the Honor Council Award Program, the Honor Roll of Outstanding Student Council Members, and Advisor Longevity Awards.
Scholarships are available each year for students with a financial need, and 18 scholarships were given out to help send students to the 2025 camp. Fundraising suggestions mentioned include a Camp Calendar Fundraiser and a Pick a Square Fundraiser.
