About

Math Motivators offers in-person math tutoring and a prep course focused on the math sections of the ACT and SAT. Students use practice tests and digital learning platforms for the math sections of the ACT and SAT, and work with a tutor who has a strong mathematics background. The program uses a 2:1 model where two students of similar ability are paired with one tutor, and for ACT/SAT prep the number of students per tutor ranges from 2–4 depending on the size of the program.

• Ages: 10–18 years old
• Schedule: Sessions are 60–90 minutes, 1x per week, for 4–8 weeks
• Price: Math Motivators offers free in-person math tutoring to students in grades 5–12 who need and want tutoring but otherwise cannot afford it.

Math Motivators focuses on tutoring students in pre-Algebra and Algebra 1, and tutors can also work with students on any mathematics topic from basic skills and number fluency through AP Calculus and AP Statistics. Math Motivators prepares students for the math sections of the ACT and SAT with a prep course, practice tests, digital learning platforms, and a dedicated tutor, with ACT/SAT math prep sessions running 60–90 minutes once per week for 4–8 weeks. In 2025, 12% of students in the program increased their ACT/SAT scores by 90 or more points, and 40% of students receiving tutoring in Philadelphia saw a 25+ point growth on their STAR Math scores. In one Iowa school in October 2023, before joining Math Motivators, 20 ninth-grade students were earning low Ds or Fs in Algebra; by the end of the semester, 95% of these students in the Math Motivators program passed Algebra, and 60% passed with As or Bs. During the 2024–2025 school year, Math Motivators volunteers tutored 613 students virtually and in person for a total of over 3,205 hours.
